La Noche de los Alebrijes” a bilingual play by Georgina Escobar in collaboration with Mundo Milagro

When a young bride and groom-to-be discover the largest Dia de Muertos altar they’ve ever seen, they suddenly notice something’s run amuck, literally. A little creature, known as an alebrije, sweeps into the room and takes the bride’s imagination, forcing past and present to meld together in this playful homage to Pedro Linares, the creator of the alebrije. Set in present day San Luis Potosí, in Mexico City in 1936, and in an afterlife that looks too much like a psychedelic Oaxacan jungle, young Pedro realizes his artistic potential through his relationship to his pets as totems, his love for painting, and a close encounter with death.

Cuando una pareja de novios descubren el altar más grande de Día de Muertos en casa de la madre del novio, la novia se da cuenta de repente que algo anda mal. Una pequeña criaturita, conocida como el alebrije, entra en la habitación de los novios y se roba así la imaginación de la novia. El pasado y el presente, la ficción y la historia se funden en este homenaje a Pedro Linares, el creador del alebrije de papel mache. Ubicada en 1936, entre San Luis Potosí, la Ciudad de México, y en un mas allá que es demasiado parecida a las selvas psicodélicas de Oaxaca, el joven Pedro se da cuenta de su potencial artístico a través de su relación con sus mascotas como tótems, su amor por la pintura, y un encuentro cercano con la muerte.

Georgina Escobar is multi-disciplinary artist, playwright and director from Ciudad Juárez, México, based in Manhattan. She is the maker of sci-fi femme narratives, ultra-humanism mythos, frontera-funk stories, and extravagant surrealism that run current systems of thinking through different filters of all-immersive visual, musical, and interpretative experiences. She is obsessed with plasticity, mobility, harmony, and perspective in drama. Escobar’s most notable work includes: Then they forgot about The Rest (Off Broadway, INTAR 2019), Alebrijes (Milagro 2018),Bi-(be) (Teatro Milagro Tour 2018), Penny Pinball Presents The Beacons (Kingsborough College 2019), Sweep (Aurora Theatre 2017), Death and the Tramp (Milagro 2016), and Ash Tree (Duke City Repertory 2012), among others. Recent collaborations include La Casa Azul (GHDC) A Ribbon About A Bomb (Exquisite Corpse Company), Quixote: On the Conquest of Self (Writers Theatre), All Strings Considered: The Zoongoro Bailongo Play, (New York Children’s Theatre and Queens College), and more. She’s written and directed for and with INTAR, Milagro, New York Children’s Theatre, the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab, Clubbed Thumb, and at Marfa Live Arts. She is a MacDowell Colony fellow, a Kilroy’s List name (StoneHeart) Djerassi Resident, and Fornés Writing Workshop participant. She’s proud recipient of a Kennedy Center National Theatre for Young Audiences Award and a Finalist for the Clubbed Thumb Biennial Commission and the 2010 National Playwright’s Conference at the O’Neill.
